There's a problem with some magic tricks, and deception in general. If you want to fool someone, you've got to make sure you know what they're already familiar with.
Here's a video of a magic trick you can buy from Tenyo Magic in Japan. (Turn off the sound if you'd prefer not to hear the EXCITED TONES of the announcer.) The trick itself may or may not fool you, but afterward, if you aren't familiar with dumplings, you're left asking, "What the heck is that?" The dumpling ignorant are not fooled or astonished or tricked, but puzzled with the final result, so they don't say "Cool!" They say "Huh?"
