This former attorney literally scammed widows

Leo G. Alvarado

Former attorney Leo G. Alvarado worked for Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.

He was paid to help low-income veterans and widows file claims with the Veterans Administration.

He submitted over 500 travel vouchers between 2003 and 2006, totaling over $134,350.

Problem was, the vouchers were fraudulent. He used Social Security numbers that were invalid, that belonged to different people, or that were for people who were dead.

Sometimes he just completely made up clients.

The VA says Alvarado never assisted any veteran or widow.

He was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in federal prison.
