How is the Darwin fish symbol related to a gravity-defying water illusion?

The Darwin fish symbol and the levitating water illusion both have Al Seckel in common. Al Seckel and John Edwards created the Darwin fish design in 1983. Seckel now experiments with optical illusions, including the amazing illusion where, thanks to a strobe light, streams of water look like drops of water moving upwards.

In this TED talk, Seckel tells us our brains are mis-wired: "Our expectations are violated in some sort of pleasing way."
